Merchet. A fine paid by a tenant or bondsman to his overlord for the right to give his daughter in marriage; it could also be paid by the woman herself.
Messuage. Originally: a portion of land occupied, or intended to be occupied, as the site for a dwelling house and its appurtenances. In later use, a dwelling house together with its outbuildings and the adjacent land assigned to its use.
Moiety. A half, one of two equal parts.
Mulct. A fine imposed for an offence.
