Scutage. A tax levied on knight's fees; chiefly in restricted sense, such a tax paid in lieu of military service.

Seize. To put in possession. To put (a person) in legal possession of a feudal holding; to invest or endow with property; to establish in a holding or an office or dignity. (passive). to be seised of or in: to be the legal possessor of.

Service. Feudal allegiance, fealty; profession of allegiance, homage. A duty (whether a payment in money or kind, a definite amount of forced labour, or some act useful or complimentary) which a tenant is bound to render periodically to his lord. A due paid in lieu of attendance at the court of a lord.

Steward. One who transacts the financial and legal business of a manor on behalf of the lord; he holds the manor-court in the lord's absence, and keeps a copy of its rolls.

Stipend. A salary or fixed periodical payment, made (annually or at shorter intervals) to a clergyman, teacher, or public official, in requital of his services.

Suit. In full, suit of court: Attendance by a tenant at the court of his lord.

Suitor. One who owed suit to a court, and in that capacity acted as an assessor or elector.

Summons. A call or citation by authority to appear before a court or judicial officer; A citation or writ apprising a defendant that an action has been begun against him and citing him to appear to the action, in default of which the court may proceed to give judgement and award execution against him.

Surrender. To give up (an estate) to one who has it in reversion or remainder; spec. to give up (a copyhold estate) to the lord of the manor, either by way of relinquishing it or of conveying it to another.
