Naming and Creating a New Page
To create a new page, you need to decide what name to give it. It's a good idea to use the 'Go' button on the search box in the sidebar: this will tell you whether a page with that name already exists, and if it doesn't, it will also give you the option to create a new page with that name; all you have to do is click on the link and start the page.
Alternatively, you can use the Create Page box below and on the main page of the site; this will warn you if a page with the chosen name already exists.
If you find that somebody has already started a page about the same topic or person you want to write about, it may be most appropriate to add material to the existing page (see editing guidelines). If someone else has already 'taken' the page name you want to use, do NOT simply replace their work with your own.
Think carefully about the name you give your page. Every page name has to be unique. If you are contributing a page about a person, you could run into problems, since some names are very common. What if your individual's name is 'John Smith', for example? Your best bet is to add some extra descriptive information to the title, such as a date of birth/death:
- John Smith, born 1700
- John Smith, died 12 June 1750
- John Smith, highwayman 1750
- John Smith, butcher of Middlesex
Bear in mind that the software is case sensitive (except that it will always capitalize the very first letter of a page name): 'John Smith' and 'John smith' and 'John SMITH' will be treated as different names. Check that the name that appears above the editing box is exactly what you wanted. If you made a typing error, you can just go back (or use the 'Cancel' link at the bottom of the editing box) and start again.
When you've typed or pasted in your work, check how it will look by clicking on the 'Preview' button just below the editing box. When you're happy with the edits, click on the 'Save' button. You can make any further changes by clicking on 'Edit' in the top right corner of this screen.
Type your new page title into the box below and press the 'Create Page' button.
