SchoolsWiki:Home Page

From Old Bailey Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

This is the Schools area of the wiki for resources to aid teaching and learning with the Old Bailey Proceedings Online.

Anyone can read the pages in the Schools area, but only members of the 'Teacher' group, which is restricted to contributors who are professionally involved in teaching and education, are permitted to create or edit pages (except for Discussion pages).

How to join the Teacher group

Find out how to be added to the group here.

Why join up?

You might, for example, want set up pages to provide and share resources for students, but you could also discuss broader issues arising from using the Old Bailey Online, and teaching the history of crime and punishment. If you have a user account, you can create and edit pages almost anywhere in the wiki, which you could use for resources to aid teaching with Old Bailey Proceedings Online. We don't require teaching resources to be located in the SchoolsWiki area.

However, the advantage of placing pages here is that, while you can still exploit the ease of use of a wiki to share knowledge with other educators and provide resources for students, you have some additional protection against vandalism or inaccurate information.

Please note that other members of the group will still be able to edit your pages. This site isn't suitable if you need to create completely restricted resources. (If you're interested in setting up a restricted wiki for, say, teaching a particular course, but don't have the technical skills to install your own, you might consider a hosted service such as Wikia.) If you suspect any abuse or malicious vandalism, however, please report it to us.

Getting Started

General Help

Publishing within the SchoolsWiki area

In order to publish the pages in the SchoolsWiki area ("namespace" in the wiki terminology) and restrict editing access to other members of the Teacher group, you simply prefix each page name with

SchoolsWiki:

The colon is crucial! So, for example:

SchoolsWiki:Teaching Statistics

If you forget (or get it slightly wrong), it's very easy to rename a page at any time after its initial creation, by using the 'Move' tab at the top of the page. You might choose not to bother - it's entirely up to you. But remember that if a page isn't in the SchoolsWiki area it can be edited by any logged-in user.

The 'Schools' category

The second thing that you should do is add your pages to the Schools category. This will make them much easier to find and share with others! You can do it in one of two ways. Either manually add the following in the editing box at the end of your content:

 [[Category:Schools]]

Or, after you've finished creating a page and saved it, you can simply type Schools in the 'Add Categories' box at the bottom of the page. You can of course add any additional categories you like!

Create a Schools Page

The special page creation box below will create a new page ready for editing, prefix the page name with 'SchoolsWiki:' and insert the Schools category wiki code (a few lines down from the top of the editing box to leave space for your content).

Wiki Tools for Teachers

Quizzes

We have installed a Quiz facility which you might find useful (but please note that it isn't suitable for the purpose of formal assessment). You can see an example of it in use here.

There is a help page describing different ways of using the Quizzes.

References

There is a facility for adding auto-numbered footnotes to pages: see more.

Reading Lists

It is possible to create customised bibliographies/reading lists using our Bibliography facilities. This is quite advanced usage: see here.

If you know of useful Mediawiki extensions for teaching, please do get in touch with your suggestion.

The Original OBP Schools Pages

Here you will find versions of the educational pages that used to be located at the main site. We were unable to update these satisfactorily when we relaunched the site in May 2008 and so we reluctantly decided to remove them altogether. We're re-publishing them here at the wiki for teachers' use - we encourage you to update and improve them, or simply use them to give you some ideas for better pages of your own.
